Fully Funded Ph.D. in CFD and Carbon-Formation Modeling

Fully Funded Ph.D. in CFD and Carbon-Formation Modeling

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Oakland University Michigan, USA Deadline: Apr 01, 2027

Details

The E-Carbon Lab at Oakland University is seeking one Ph.D. student to conduct computational research on carbon formation in high-temperature reacting systems, including methane and hydrocarbon pyrolysis, electrified thermal reactors, particle formation, and carbon structural evolution. Potential research topics include: - Computational fluid dynamics of reacting flows - Particle and population-balance modeling - Chemical kinetics and thermochemical reactor modeling - Multiscale modeling of carbon formation, morphology, and structure - Development and integration of reduced-order models into reactor simulations Applicants must have a completed master’s degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Strong scientific- programming experience in Fortran, C++, Python, MATLAB, Julia, or a comparable language is required. Applicants should have personally developed or substantially modified scientific code. Experience limited to operating commercial CFD software is not sufficient on its own. The position is fully funded and includes tuition support, a research and/or teaching assistantship stipend, and standard graduate-assistant benefits. Funding is anticipated for up to four years, subject to satisfactory academic and research progress. The preferred start date is the earliest feasible academic term. Applicants should first email Dr. Francisco Cepeda (franciscocepeda@oakland.edu) with: - A CV - Unofficial transcripts - A brief statement describing relevant computational experience and research interests - Evidence of relevant work, such as a publication, thesis chapter, code sample, or GitHub repository when available - Earliest feasible start term Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
