PhD position in lattice QCD

Institute for Nuclear Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Germany Deadline: May 25, 2026

Details

Job description: A PhD position in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is available in Dr. Simon Kuberski’s group at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The position is embedded in the Mainz lattice QCD activities within the PRISMA++ Cluster of Excellence and the Mainz Physics Academy (MPA). The research will focus on lattice QCD studies of heavy-flavor physics, in particular precision computations of observables relevant for B-meson phenomenology. The position is funded for three years and will be remunerated according to the German public sector salary scale TV-L E13 (75%). The project involves numerical simulations and data analysis in lattice QCD, contributions to the development and optimization of analysis and simulation codes, and work on high-performance computing systems. The successful candidate will also participate in the scientific activities of the Mainz lattice group and present results at conferences and workshops. Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a Master’s degree in physics, with a solid background in quantum field theory and particle physics. An interest in numerical methods and scientific computing is expected. Programming experience (e.g. C/C++, Python) is desirable. Previous experience in lattice QCD is beneficial but not required. The successful candidate will be part of the Mainz Physics Academy (MPA), which offers a structured PhD program including advanced courses, workshops, and networking opportunities. The expected starting date is in summer/autumn 2026. The deadline for applications is May 25, 2026. Review of applications will begin in June 2026. To apply please fill out the online form at https://prisma.uni-mainz.de/en/phd-fellowship-program/#bewerbungsformular-phd-fellowships and send your application documents in a signle pdf file per email to mpa@uni-mainz.de. Applications should include: a CV, a motivation letter, Scans of university degrees including transcripts of records (lists of courses and grades). Please also arrange for two signed letters of recommendation by senior scientists, to be emailed separately directly by the referees to the above address. Letters of recommendation must be submitted before the deadline. Questions and informal inquiries can be sent to mpa@uni-mainz.de. Contact: MPA office (mpa@uni-mainz.de) Letters of Reference should be sent to: mpa@uni-mainz.de More Information: https://prisma.uni-mainz.de/en/phd-fellowship-program/
