PhD Studentship — CSC–UoB Joint PhD Scholarship (2027 entry), University of Bristol CFD, turbulence, porous-media flows, environmental fluid mechanics, physics- informed / data-driven ML Applications are invited from CSC-eligible candidates to undertake a PhD at the University of Bristol under the supervision of Dr Mohammad Jadidi, School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering. Research theme Pore-resolved and interface-resolved large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flow and heat/mass transfer in graded or engineered porous media Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) and hybrid physics–AI methods for hidden-field discovery, inverse problems and reduced-order modelling of turbulent environmental flows Urban and environmental fluid mechanics, including canopy- and terrain-aware dispersion and atmospheric stability effects Coupling of scale-resolving CFD with laboratory experiments (PIV, F-FID, refractive-index matching) for validation and data-driven model development Candidate profile Strong degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics or a closely related field Background in fluid mechanics and CFD; experience with LES/DNS and solvers such as OpenFOAM is desirable Interest or experience in scientific machine learning / PINNs (PyTorch, JAX or TensorFlow) is an advantage How to apply Informal enquiries first: email Dr Jadidi (m.jadidi@bristol.ac.uk) with CV, a short statement of research interests, and English-test status if already taken.
