PhD Studentship : DNS of Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Transition
University of Arizona
AZ, Tucson, United States
Deadline: Aug 01, 2027
Details
Use of high-fidelity Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) for investigating stability and laminar-turbulent
transition for boundary layers at hypersonic speeds M=4 to 14). The focus is on understanding the relevant
physical mechanism in the linear and nonlinear stages of the transition process, including the break down to
turbulent flow. Based on the findings of these fundamental studies, promising flow control methods will by
investigated using again high-fidelity DNS.
For the investigations fully tested and validated in-house developed linear stability and DNS codes will be
available.
Useful experience/skills/interest:
Experience with high-performance computing; coding experience (e.g. C, Python, Fortran, ...)
Interest in flow physics, high-speed flows
Use of commercial or open-source CFD codes (e.g. Open Foam, SU2, Fluent, US3D ...)
