At the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), a full-time position (40h/week) in the Department “Modelling of Atmospheric Processes” is available as
Scientific Programmer (f/m/d)
The position is initially offered for two years with a start date as soon as possible and the option to be made permanent afterwards. The salary is according to class EG 12 TV-L.
Your Tasks:
The successful candidate will facilitate code collaboration within the Modelling of Atmospheric Processes (MOD) department and, in particular, manage IAP code contributions to the upper atmosphere components of the ICON model in collaboration with partner institutions such as the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) and German Weather Service (DWD), including GPU porting. They will perform production runs of ICON and provide corresponding debugging and/or performance analysis, document ICON model usage and workflows within MOD, as well as develop and extend in-house climate data processing and visualization software.
Your Qualifications / Experience:
completed university degree (bachelor’s or higher) in informatics, mathematics, physics, geosciences or a related field with preferably good results
strong interest in High Performance Computing on CPUs and GPUs
experience with simulations on supercomputers producing large volumes of data
proficiency in Fortran, Python, shell scripting, and processing simulation data
experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., using GitHub/GitLab)
experience with Linux command-line environments (including remote systems via SSH) and Windows
interest in modern software engineering practices (testing, code review, modular design)
fluency in English as working language
