Three PhD Positions in Quantum Gravity
The Physics Department at the University of Graz
Australia
Deadline: Apr 28, 2026
Details
Job description:
The Physics Department at the University of Graz invites applications for three PhD positions, expected to begin in Fall 2026 (or earlier, if mutually agreed).
The successful candidate will join the Quantum Gravity Group led by Alessia Platania.
Research interests of the group include:
comparing different quantum gravity approaches (particularly asymptotic safety and string theory) at the level of the effective field theories (EFTs) they induce,
constraining and testing the consistency of the asymptotic safety landscape,
investigating mechanisms and conditions enabling scenarios of effective asymptotic safety, where asymptotic safety serves as a bridge between EFT and a more fundamental theory.
The group offers a highly stimulating and supportive research environment, with regular internal meetings, journal clubs, and thematic discussions. Members benefit from strong international connections and opportunities for collaboration. In particular, the Graz group will work in close synergy with Alessia Platania’s parallel research group at the Niels Bohr Institute, with regular joint meetings as well as research visits in both directions.
Profile and responsibilities
Applicants should hold (or be close to completing by the start of the position) a Master’s degree in Physics. A solid background in quantum field theory and general relativity is expected. Familiarity with renormalization group methods is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate strong motivation to work on quantum gravity and, in particular, on the research directions above.
The successful candidate will carry out research within the quantum gravity group, under the supervision of Alessia Platania, and will participate in group meetings, seminars, and collaborative research activities. The position also includes limited participation in the academic life of the department, such as assisting in teaching or tutoring activities as required by university regulations.
Application documents
Two PhD positions are funded through the FWF doc.fund grant DOC3389025; interested candidates can apply following the instructions here and selecting the projects C1 and C2 (deadline April 17th).
One additional PhD position is funded by the University of Graz; interested candidates can apply using the Graz University portal (deadline April 28th).
The required documents for this position are:
A motivation letter (approx. 1 page), detailing your background, research ambitions, specific motivations for joining the group, and how you envision contributing to its goals
A research statement (approx. 2 pages), describing research activity to date, as well as possible future plans
Curriculum Vitae (including a list of publications, if applicable)
Transcripts of grades from Bachelor's and Master's degrees
At least 2 reference letters, to be sent by the same deadline to a.platania90@gmail.com, using the subject line "Graz-PhD - Letter - Candidate’s Full Name"
